How We Began

Hills Church is a new church that started when a team of 27 people moved to Pullman in the summer of 2012. It is the very first church plant sent out by Blue Sky Church, in Bellevue, WA. It's also the first grandbaby church planted from a small network of churches that we're affiliated with. The idea of planting a church in Pullman had been in the minds and prayers of Blue Sky's leaders and overseers for a number of years. With a shared vision of planting churches in university cities, Washington State University felt like a natural location to send our first church plant. In February of 2012, the overseers of Blue Sky felt that God was leading them to send out its first church plant in the summer of 2012, and that Ern Menocal (Blue Sky's Executive Pastor), was called to lead it.

The history of how Hills Church started ties back to the history of Blue Sky Church (which in turn goes back well before that). Steve Morgan, Blue Sky's lead pastor, started Vine Church in Carbondale, Illinois in 1995 with 6 people. Over a few years the church had grown to over 600 people. While at a conference in 2003, Steve felt God's leading to "do it again," specifically feeling God's direction to start a church in the Seattle area. After much prayer, counsel, and confirmation; Steve, his family, and a team of about 50 people relocated and made Seattle home. Ern Menocal, who leads Hills Church, was one of those original team members who helped start Blue Sky. Since the summer of 2004, Blue Sky Church has continued to grow into a vibrant church made up of people from all around the Seattle area. Convinced Jesus was leading this, Ern and his wife Laura sold their house in Seattle, and gathered team members for the new church beginning in March. The spring of 2012 felt like a non-stop endeavor of making preparations for the move to Pullman and the start of a new church! Hills Church began gathering for public services in August 2012. In preparation for that, the infant church and its members spent the summer settling into town, working out service details, and doing work on the construction of permanent offices at the Crimson Village in Pullman, all while training to prepare for the launch of a new church!

One of the desires of Hills Church is to be a local church where people can come in and learn about Jesus in a way that is impactful and life changing. We also hope to be a church that plants many other healthy local churches in university cities in Idaho, Montana, and beyond.  Hills Church is a multi-ethnic church made of students and professionals, married and single, children and babies. Our services are casual with good music, relevant teaching from the Bible, and an engaging Kids' Program. Now that we’ve started, we hope that you will pay us a visit at the Bell Tower in downtown Pullman.
